Bathroom Organization Tips to Maximize Space in a Small Bathroom

Tight on space in your small bathroom? Check out these quick tips and creative storage hacks to help minimize the bathroom clutter:

1.) Check Product Expirations

Before you begin to invest in storage hacks, check to make sure the products in your bathroom haven’t expired, leaked, etc. Some items typically stored in bathrooms don’t have expiration dates on them which makes it hard. Take your best guess at how long you have had the item & do an honest assessment if you have actually used a particular product in the last year. Most make up expires after a year with some products like mascara expiring at 3 months. Decluttering bathroom products that aren’t used/aren’t effective or have expired can instantly free up space in a small bathroom and makes room for what you do use.

2.) Use the floor

Have extra toilet paper? Large hair tools? Heating pads? Larger bins on the bathroom floor, like my favorites from Target here, are a great way to store bulkier/larger items. Even just two bins on the floor can free up valuable real estate for smaller items to be stored on the bathroom closet shelves.

3.) Leverage vertical space with back of bathroom door storage

Using over the door hooks is a great solution to hang in use towels or to hang a robe if you lack space for a towel rack in your bathroom. A full Elfa Mesh Over the Door Rack/System can add instant storage to your bathroom with several baskets to contain your bathroom supplies. The baskets can be removed if you need to carry supplies over to the sink.

4.) Hang shelves close to sink for frequently used items

Have a pedestal sink in your bathroom? Hang floating shelves next to your sink to store your most frequently used bathroom items. Use individual clear bins, cups, or divided bins to group your daily bathroom items into categories- this helps prevent items from getting knocked over & keeps the shelf less cluttered.

5.) Buy bins that stack

If you are lucky enough to have a closet or cabinet in your bathroom, consider stacking bins/drawers to maximize space. Container store has some great options/styles at a variety of price points. Group your bathroom items into categories and place in these bins. Here are some of my favorite options from the Container Store:

6.) Claim the inside of cabinet drawers

The back of your bathroom cabinet drawers are prime real estate to store extra items. Hang hair tools like blow dryers & curling items on hooks & use adhesive baskets like these from the Command brand in various sizes for instant storage.

7.) Repurpose a nearby closet for “back stock” items

Have extra “full” bottles of your favorite products but don’t have room to store in your bathroom? If you have a nearby hall or bedroom closet, consider creating a bathroom “back stock” area using a bin or basket. Extra bathroom items like shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper etc can be pulled from this area & brought into the bathroom when products run out. The Multi-purpose bins from the Container Store are my favorite product to store larger bathroom toiletries. If you do have room in a bathroom closet for this back stock area, use upper shelves in the closet for these items and label bins accordingly.

8.) No closet? No problem- create storage space with a Utility cart

If you have some useable space between a bathroom vanity and say a wall or a toilet, consider purchasing a tiered utility cart. Use the top shelf of the cart for your most frequently used items as they will be easiest to reach, and store less frequently used items or towels/extra toilet paper on the other shelves. Use cups or smaller baskets inside the cart to keep items from rolling around. If you have a bit more space in your bathroom, you could invest in a hutch or free standing cabinet.
