Shoe Storage Solutions: 5 Ways to Organize Your Footwear with Style
Shopping for shoes brings joy to many of us- the brands, the colors, the styles- a gorgeous or fun pair of shoes can complete an outfit! However, shoe collections can quickly grow and take over a closet or other living spaces without a proper shoe storage solution. Finding the correct shoe storage solutions is key to maintaining an organized and aesthetically pleasing home. Here are some creative and practical ways to store your shoes to maximize space in your home.
Assess Your Shoe Collection
Before shopping for shoe storage solutions, assess your shoe collection. Group your shoes by type (heels, boots, sandals) and evaluate the number of shoes you own of each type. Assess how frequently you wear the shoe and their condition. Let go of any shoes you haven’t worn in the last year so you aren’t creating room to store something you don’t intend to wear.
Shoe Racks
Shoe racks maximize floor space by utilizing vertical space, which is ideal for small spaces. They are a perfect solution for closets or entryways and are available at HomeGoods, Container Store, or other home decor stores. Optimize the layout of hanging items in your closet to leave space for a shoe rack underneath. If space allows in your closet, consider using a bookcase or taller floor-to-ceiling shelves—putting out-of-season shoes higher up and in-season or frequently worn shoes at a more accessible level.
Shoe Bins & Baskets
There are so many options for storing shoes in bins or baskets. A large, oversized basket from stores like Target or HomeGoods is excellent for casual, everyday shoe storage (think the 2-3 pairs you frequently wear out of the house). Place these baskets in an entryway, under a console or desk, or in hall closets. If space allows, you can designate a basket for each family member.
Stack shoe bins on closet shelves or the floor for more extensive shoe collections, and utilize clear bins to see shoes stored inside. Bins with drop front openings allow for easy access to shoes. Here are some of my favorite shoe bins:
Shoe Cabinets
For those who prefer to conceal shoes in high-visibility areas like entryways or hallways, a shoe cabinet offers a sleek and tidy solution with doors that conceal shoes. Shoe cabinets can also double as a surface for keys and other essentials. The downside is that a shoe cabinet doesn’t hold as many shoes as an oversized basket or can accommodate larger shoe sizes.
Under-Bed Storage
Utilizing the space under your bed is an effective way to store out-of-season shoes, freeing up space in your closet for frequently worn shoes. Opt for a clear under-the-bed storage bin from Container Store, which helps keep shoes dust-free.
Custom Closet Systems
If you have an extensive collection and the budget, consider investing in a custom closet system from St. Louis companies like NewSpace, St. Louis Closet Company, or Closet Factory. Custom closet solutions with adjustable shelves, drawers, and dedicated shoe storage areas can be tailored to your space and needs. This option keeps your shoes organized and adds resale value to your home.
